Inspiring music-makers

Professional teaching, conducting and workshop direction

I work with children, adults, choirs and individual singers to help improve technique, develop confidence and help find a real joy in singing!

I also teach the piano and work with amateur and professional musicians across the UK on a wide variety of projects – from office choirs to chorister school preparation.

Approachable and open, I bring my passion for music and my experience in technique and musicality to every aspect of the work I do, encouraging people to use their voices properly and safely, and teaching them how to interpret the music to produce the best performance.

It’s nice to be taught by Miss Burston because she actually cares about how I’m doing in the week and not just the singing. She helps me remember things for my Grade 5 theory too and never gets even slightly annoyed if I forget things because she knows I am doing my best.

About me

I currently direct in the Royal College of Music Junior Department, including a choir for treble voices for children aged 10-13, two girls’ choirs and a mixed voice Senior Choir comprised mainly of 16-19 year olds. This year I have also taught Intermediate Musicianship and run a class called Musicianship for Singers.

Additionally, I am Assistant Music Director of Wimbledon Choral Society who I work with regularly throughout the year. I am also Assistant Music Director of Leatherhead Choral Society who I work with a few times a year. Choirs I have worked with as Deputy/stand-in Music Director include Holmbury Choral, St Alban’s Choral Society, London Welsh Chorale, Reading Festival Chorus and Henley Youth Choir.

Teaching-wise, I currently work with the choristers at Peterborough Cathedral, individually and in small groups, and have taken some of the rehearsals, mainly with the Probationers. In 2019 I set up and ran the pre-Probationer training. I also teach in a Prep School in Surrey and teach privately from home. All lessons are currently being taught online.

Over Zoom (Online lesson) was strange at first because I wasn’t used to it, but I feels it works really well. I still feel Miss Burston is in the room with me, I don’t feel I’m being treated any differently. It doesn’t feel awkward, she knows when I’m nervous which is quite a lot because that’s just me and she doesn’t force me to do things. But I find I then try to do it anyway because I feel if I get it wrong, it’ll be totally fine.
